Flooding
Floods are common in B.C. and can happen at any time of year. The most severe floods usually occur in spring and early summer due to heavy rain and melting snow.
Throughout the year, we’re having more storms and extreme rainfall events. These changes in the flow of water can overwhelm rivers, streams, and soil, leading to flooding and landslides.
Major storms, like heavy rain, melting snow, and/or storm surges can increase risk of flooding, particularly in low lying areas. Sea levels are expected to rise gradually over the century as a result of climate change, and winter storms are expected to increase in intensity.
Planning for climate change and sea level rise in our community now will help reduce costs and impacts in the future since the risk from wave inundation (shoreline flooding) is expected to increase over time.
